Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas)

One of the 7 turtle families in the world, the name were given from the green fat underneath their shell, listed endangered by the International Union for The Conservation of Nature, conservation activities is the among the hottest topic. The largest green turtle ever seen was about 400kg but average weight were around 150-200kg for adult turtles and these is the only turtle species that willing to go for sunbathing at the beaches. 20years old onward is the beginning of their sexual maturity. Living mostly in tropical and subtropical weather, green turtles feeding mainly on sea grasses and algae, it is also believed that jellyfish is one of their favourite foods. Due to lack of knowledge, it is hard to determine the life cycle of green turtle.
Female green turtle normally lay eggs at night and taking about 2-4hours to complete the process from selecting a proper site to closing their nest. During mating season, the males, migrate to nesting beach for the female as far as over 2000km to spawning ground, the females normally mate every 2 years and the males every year, the nesting season are all years around but the hottest season will be between May-August in tropical. Averagely, they get 120 eggs at once and hatch after an average of 60days. By the way, its not all about the numbers, basically, only 1 out of 1000 will be survived to become adult, this is true because when they were young, eaten my shorebird (we can say mostly sea eagle here), crabs and other big fish like barracudas, although an adult are able to protect their self- here is worsen predators- big shark and human being(mainly killed in developing country for their mat skins and shells), even worse, peoples hunting turtle for their flesh and eggs as delicacy food, In some countries, the price of turtle can be as high as us$30/kg, in Chinese community, they believed that eating turtles can bring long-lived. Although there is law in many countries to protect turtles, the enforcement is still at minimum. (Breaking news- the biggest harvest of green turtle’s egg was in Bali for religious purpose).

After all, the sex of green turtle was determined by the surrounding temperature, high temperatures intend to be female and low temperature instead. Scientist believed that green turtle spend their first few years in the deep water before moving to the coastal for sea grasses (while some believe that young green turtle was omnivorous before they turn to herbivorous). Adult turtle likely to return to nest on the beach where they were born, with one breathe, green turtles are able to go for deep dive for as long as 5minutes for their feeding activities, this is due to their lung designed to allow rapid exchange of oxygen and preventing gasses from being trapped. Without activities or stress, green turtles are able to rest/sleep underwater for hours. Shocking news- green turtle are easily get stress and can be drowned!!
